MAIN STREET

The quintessential Disney Park, the Magic Kingdom is to us and many others, the most exciting and exhilarating part of Walt Disney World.  From the moment you step onto Main Street USA, you are transported to a place where the cares of the outside world seem to magically melt away.

The park is built on a wheel/spoke design with the
Cinderella Castle in the center of the wheel and the different themed lands emanating from the center.

Join us as we take a look at this special park and its attractions up close and personal with pictures, videos and descriptions.  Choose a land to visit!

Take a step back in time to a place you can only find in your imagination.  Main Street USA is the gateway to the magic that lies inside Walt Disney World.  Shops, dining and refreshments lie on your way toward Cinderella Castle at the end of Main Street.  This place bustles with life during the day with all the accoutrements of yesteryear including horse drawn trolleys, old fashioned cars and more.  There's even an authentic Barber Shop.  Disney has in the past few years homogenized this area a bit by getting rid of some of the unique attractions that used to live here (Main Street Cinema, Penny Arcade, The Magic Shop and the like) and replaced them with retail space.  Still, much of the charm remains.

Where dreams come to life, Fantasyland is Disney at it's simple best.  Classic "dark rides" of all your storybook favorites come to life.  This is as close as Disney gets to an old fashioned Midway.  Be sure to visit the newest inhabitants of Fantasyland, Winnie The Pooh which replaced Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Mickey's PhilharMagic which replaces Festival of the Lion King.

FRONTIERLAND

Pioneers behold, a slice of the Old West right here in  Florida thanks to creative Imagineering.  Two of the parks best E Ticket attractions (translated: big draw) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain lie within the boundaries of Frontierland.  Positioned right next to each other, they break the cardinal rule of theme park planning.  This can lead to you feeling like a sardine in a can on a crowded day.  When it gets like this, escape to Tom Sawyer Island for a relaxing break!

NEW TOMORROWLAND

Renovated in 1995, Disney's New Tomorrowland takes a look at the future through the eyes of the past.  The problem Disney Imagineers had to overcome here was how to keep the Future looking futuristic.   The solution was to "retro-ize" this land with a vision of what science fiction writers thought the future would look like in the 1920's and 1930's.  The result looks best at night as New Tomorrowland takes on a fascinating if not somewhat eerie glow.

 PARK FACTS

·  Magic Kingdom sits on 107 acres with the towering Cinderella Castle at its center. Similar to Disneyland in California, the park is divided into seven themed lands -- Main Street, U.S.A.; Adventureland; Frontierland; Liberty Square; Fantasyland; Mickey's Toontown Fair; and Tomorrowland.

·  Cinderella Castle, the park's icon, stands 189 feet tall and includes 18 towers. Inside its main hall, five glittering mosaics created under the direction of Dorothea Redmond and Hanns-Joachim Scharff tell the story of Cinderella in 500 brilliant hues of glass.

·  Walt's dream was realized when Magic Kingdom, the first of four theme parks at the sprawling Florida site, opened Oct. 1, 1971. Walt's older brother and lifelong business partner, Roy O. Disney, inaugurated the park with a heartfelt dedication that remains today on a bronze plaque in Main Street, U.S.A.:

WALT DISNEY WORLD
is a tribute to the philosophy and life of
Walter Elias Disney

... and to the talents, the dedication, and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney's dream come true. May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place ... a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn -- together.

Fantasyland Expansion!
The largest expansion in
Magic Kingdom history is underway, a project that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland and deliver a new home for Ariel, new ways to interact with favorite Disney princesses, an exciting new family coaster, a double dose of Dumbo and more. Scheduled to open in phases beginning in late 2012, the new Fantasyland will immerse guests in Disney stories as never before.

Disney calls the Animal Kingdom "A New Species of Theme Park" and indeed it is.  It is unlike any Disney park you have visited before.

While some critics and Disney fans have panned the park saying "there's not enough to do", we would have to call it a good park only getting better!  We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and elaborate theming and lush tropical feel.

Also rumored for sometime in the future is an additional land with roller coaster.  Time will tell and we will keep you posted.

AFRICA

Step into adventure as you travel to Africa.  Imagineers went to great lengths to recreate a town that never was... Harambe (named after one of the parks key designers).  Harambe is a collection of architecural styles found throughout Africa and the look is very authentic.  You will swear these buildings have been here for years!

SUNSET BOULEVARD

Disney's imagineers broke one of their own rules of theme park design by putting 2 A+ or E Ticket attractions at virtually the same location in the park.  Sunset Boulevard is the MOST crowded venue in the park.  Add in an enormous night time spectacular (Fantasmic!) to the mix and ugh... you have a mess on your hands.  The street is narrow and during peak season, you will feel like a sardine in a can.... but wait... surprises, thrills and chills await.

Epcot was to be Walt Disney's dream of the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow.  In some ways, the forward thinking of Epcot's Future World and the diversity of cultures at World Showcase keep a part of Walt's dream alive.  Disney in this case turned the idea of Epcot into a fantastic theme park and it could be argued, moved the spirit of Epcot to the Disney built town of Celebration, Florida, only miles from the Magic of Walt Disney World.

Epcot is by far the most "adult" of all the theme parks, but don't be fooled.  There is plenty to see and do here and fun for all ages!

EPCOT FACT SHEET

Excitement of discovery:

Walt Disney envisioned a showcase for innovation. A place where people could experience the cutting edge of technology. A place celebrating human achievement. The embryo of an idea grew to become Epcot, the Disney discovery park -- 300 acres of attractions, shows, interactive presentations, dining, shopping and architectural wonders where guests are immersed in a celebration of both technological accomplishments and international cultural achievements.

Planning the dream:

On Oct. 1, 1978, Card Walker, then president of Walt Disney Productions, revealed plans for Epcot, a theme park inspired by Walt’s philosophies. A groundbreaking ceremony was held one year later.

Epcot was designed with two “lands” of discovery: Future World and World Showcase. Future World showcases the land, the seas, communication, imagination, energy and technology. World Showcase is a kaleidoscope of nations from throughout the world brought together to celebrate their cultural heritage, arts and entertainment.

Celebrating human achievement:

The opening of Innoventions in 1994 marked an exciting addition to the Epcot experience. This ever-changing exposition of gadgets and gizmos in the heart of Future World gives Epcot guests an opportunity to see, feel and touch the latest inventions and innovations that may change the way they live their lives.

Opening Day:

On Oct. 1, 1982, Epcot opened. The dedication plaque still reads:

“To all who come to this place of joy, hope and friendship, welcome.

Epcot Center is inspired by Walt Disney’s creative genius. Here, human achievements are celebrated through imagination, the wonders of enterprise, and concepts of a future that promises new and exciting benefits for all.

“May
Epcot Center entertain, inform and inspire. And, above all, may it instill a new sense of belief and pride in man’s ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere.”

…E. Cardon Walker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Walt Disney Productions, Oct. 24, 1982

The lay of the Land:

SIZE:
300 acres

TWO WORLDS:
Two distinct areas: Future World, a showcase of new ideas and technology; and World Showcase, villages celebrating 11 nations situated along a 1.3-mile promenade that encircles the 40-acre World Showcase Lagoon.

ENTRANCES:
Epcot has two entrances. The original entrance is convenient to Epcot’s 162-acre parking area and the Epcot monorail station (the monorail runs between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom Transportation and Ticket Center three miles to the north).

The International Gateway entrance opened in 1990 near the France pavilion in World Showcase, providing park access to guests staying in Epcot resort area hotels -- Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s BoardWalk, Walt Disney World Swan and Walt Disney World Dolphin.
